I agree.. in fact since I changed my mother's PC for a Mac (mini), she has stopped asking me to solve problems and is not requesting me to enable her to do more things (how to upload photos to flickr, how to use the web more, etc)... one of the excuses I made for myself getting an iPad as soon as it comes out is that, when in 6 months Apple will release a newer version with a camera, etc, I will give this one to my mom (probably with the keyboard dock as I don't see her typing on the touchscreen any time soon)...

The approach that novice users don't need more than what the iPad offers only works for users who haven't used any other system before they have seen the iPad. Other systems may be less perfect, but anyone who has already gone through the learning curve of another system doesn't need an iPad to make things easy. I don't think there's a huge number of people who are novices and haven't already learned to do what the iPad can do in Windows, and on top of that are willing to pay about twice what an unrestricted netbook costs.

And if you weren't looking for a problem that the iPad would be the solution for, you'd know there are things like http://www.simpc.com that offer solutions for the issues you're describing. And a PlayStation 3 also offers hassle free basic functionality. But those solutions also are clearly limited, and that limitation doesn't make it cheaper, so it's still a weird choice to go for the limited option.
